The more basic Astrophotography page explained how to use a DSLR to capture images and then stack them in an applicaiton.
This page describes a more advanced setup that can automate these tasks and can be used to run an imaging session from start to finish.
As mentioned we generally want the camera to capture many images so that we can stack them later and thereby reduce sensor noise.
All these devices are connected to a PC of some sort to control everything and run the sequencing software.
The most popular one seems to be an free one called N.I.N.A., at least on Windows. There are commercial apps as well (like Sequence Generator Pro and SharpCap).
